Here's Richard and his son at the Makahiki Challenge, 10th Anniversary, a fun 5k trail and mud run with some obstacles at Kualoa Ranch. "My son was able to complete all the obstacles on his own, even ones that most adults could not complete! The hardest one was the multirig, which had monkey bars to Olympic rings to a horizontal ladder (skinnier, monkey bar-like). The transition from the Olympic rings to the ladder was difficult as the ladder was at least a foot and a half higher than the last ring, so you had to really swing and reach up. The majority failed that one, but we both succeeded! The next most difficult was the muddy rope climb. I struggled, but eventually made it. My son made it up pretty easily, but he is much lighter than I am lol. There were other obstacles such as a tire flip, sandbag carry (only one weight so he carried the same as the adults), deep mud pit, low crawl under a huge net, rock carry, vertical cargo net, and our favorite: the water slide! We went down twice! This year may be the last year they put this on, but I am hopeful they continue it. So much fun! Hope you can experience it with us next year!"

How to Secure Retirement in Your 50s and 60s:
A comfortable and financially stable retirement is one of the most important goals for many Americans today. However, not many individuals plan for their retirement well during the last decades of employment, making them fall short of achieving their retirement American dream.
Of the most common dilemmas for individuals in their 50s and 60s is how best they will fund their lifestyle once they get into retirement. According to the Society of Actuaries, a non-smoking person of average health retiring at the age of 65 has at least a one in three chance of living until age 90.1 But only seven out of ten workers are confident they have enough saved to live comfortably in retirement, according to a study by the Employee Benefit Research Institute.2
For you to secure your retirement, your 50s and 60s are the years to aggressively eliminate debt from your life, save more than you did in your previous years, and work to develop a sound retirement plan based on your current assets, investments, income, and savings.
Here are few tips to help you secure retirement in your 50s and 60s:
Begin Serious Planning for Retirement
In the last decade prior to retirement, it is imperative that you get a clear picture of your financial status. Begin by taking stock of where you stand with assets, income, savings, and most importantly debt. List all your assets and calculate them against debts and expenses such as mortgage, insurance, vehicle loans and more. Having a clear picture of where your finances stand forms the basis of your retirement planning.
Next, consider what you would like your retirement lifestyle to look like and estimate your expected monthly budget. Would you like to maintain the same lifestyle as when you were working? Would you be moving to a new location? Do you have family members to support even in retirement? Do you plan on working part-time during retirement? All these questions and more will help you form a well-balanced budget for retirement.
Finally, decide on when to retire so that you can plan on the savings and debt-reduction steps to take for you to secure your financial wellness in retirement early. Here is a helpful online chart from the Social Security Administration to guide you.

Planning Inheritances for Your Children:
Distribute Your Estate Yourself
One common mistake parents make is leaving their eldest child as the beneficiary and giving them the mandate to distribute the estate. Estate planning attorneys don't recommend this approach as it can cause conflict and hard feelings among family members. To negate alleviate any fighting, do the distribution yourself. Make a list of everything you own and indicate who actually gets what and the method to be used to distribute what is left.
Eliminate Uncertainties by Creating a Trust
Often, people choose to leave their children's inheritance outright to them, either immediately or at a specific age, such as 25 or 30. However once your child receives their inheritance outright, it is legally considered their own property and will automatically become subject to creditors' claims, including to any spouse during a divorce. That is why many estate planning attorneys recommend you create a trust instead.
It is possible to structure a trust in different ways or even to continue the trust for the child's entire lifetime. If drafted properly, then this lifetime "dynasty trust" will create an asset protection barrier between the child and the child's creditors. Trusts also keep your estate out of probate court, saving you (and your heirs) both time and money. In addition, trusts can minimize the amount paid in estate taxes.
Regardless of what you choose, you'll want to discuss your plans and intentions with a good estate planning attorney. Remember, you are ultimately responsible for the successful transfer of your estate to your beneficiaries.

Here's John and Lisa, just enjoying a break at Keei Cafe in Kealakekua before starting the Year of the Tiger.

Here’s an interesting article by naturalist guide Peter Keali’I Theone in Flux Hawaii that explores the scientific basis of mo‘olelo (Hawaiian tales).
“To be fair, moʻolelo are shrouded in metaphor, layered in double entendre, and can be difficult to decipher. But the reason for these poetic devices is more carefully calculated than you think. Modern science has the benefit of written language and can afford to be dry, methodical, and verbose. Moʻolelo must use every tool to appeal to human nature. Delivered through song, dance, and chant, moʻolelo are designed to be visceral, impactful, and spectacular. Hula, mele, and oli are memorable, shareable, and teachable. They are publication, distribution, and peer review of preserving observations and conclusions for generations to come. Science and Hawaiian storytelling arrive at the same destination, even as they use different vehicles to get there.”

*Planning Inheritances for Your Children:*
As a parent, it can be close to impossible to sleep soundly knowing that your children are not financially stable, whether they are toddlers or grown-ups. That is why you need to start thinking about estate planning, which should not be taken lightly. It is important because it prevents your assets from ending up with beneficiaries that were not intended and eliminates family conflicts when you are gone.
Here are some useful tips when handling estate planning.
*Communicate Openly with Your Children*
It is common that children underestimate or overestimate the total value of their parent’s estate. Talking to your children about your estate not only gives them a sense of how much they stand to get, but it gives them peace of mind. It also reduces family conflict when the time comes. Discussing inheritance with your children can bring up issues that might prevent the proper distribution of your assets. You also get a chance to explain your decision.
*Level the Field*
If you have several children, you are probably wondering if they should all get equal amounts. If you wish to minimize fights after your passing, it might be a good decision to give each an equal amount. This does not just mean in terms of assets, but also in matters concerning responsibilities. Under certain circumstances, it can be impossible to leave an equal share but focus on equitable inheritance.
Equitable inheritance means each child receives a fair amount given his unique circumstances. For example, if your youngest child has yet to attend college while the others have already graduated from programs where you have footed the bill, you might allocate more money to youngest so they have the same educational opportunity.
The same logic might apply if you have given one child money for a down payment on a house - instead of just dividing your assets, you could deduct the amount of the down payment from the that child's inheritance.

Tatau: Marks of Polynesia, currently on exhibit at Bishop Museum (through July 4th), explores the beauty of Samoan tattoos as well as the role they play in the preservation and propagation of Samoan culture. Through an array of photographs, Tatau showcases the work of traditional Samoan tattoo masters alongside that of younger practitioners working within and influenced by the tradition today. This exhibition is an opportunity to learn what tatau signifies in Samoan culture, and how it helps Samoans and other Polynesians living abroad stay connected to their identity and heritage.
As the Tatau exhibition highlights Samoan tattooing implements, Bishop Museum has also curated its cultural collection items to highlight implements from both Hawaiʻi and Sāmoa, as an added feature to the exhibition. Through this effort, the Museum aims to show the connections between the cultures of Polynesia through the lens of tattooing practices and traditions. These select items from Bishop Museum’s collections are rarely on view.

Richard says, "Life can be a little hectic at times, but recently things have been pretty extreme with what is going on in the world. Sometimes looking at things differently may help. I truly believe we can create our own reality if we focus on it and try to block out all the negative energy around us, especially things that are out of our control. This poem really spoke to me and I hope it helps give a different perspective and possibly brighten someone's day." #positivevibes #positiveenergyattractspositivity

“There is a difference between saving a building and historic restoration. While there is nothing wrong with the former, Mason says, his work tells a specific story about a place and a time. This might require removing parts of a building that were added at some point after it was completed or adding back things that were removed.”

It’s possible the pandemic affected your financial life in some way - whether it caused a delay in meeting your savings goals, altered your income stream or drained your emergency fund. Millions of people were impacted by the unexpected events of 2020, and you are not alone on the road to getting things back on track.
A financial advisor can offer support and guidance as you get back on track towards your long-term financial goals. Each financial journey is unique, and an advisor can provide you with personalized advice as you make changes to your goals and adjust your plan accordingly. Not sure where to start with your post-pandemic financial situation? An advisor can help you identify your needs and create both short- and long-term goals.

We recently took the kids to the Arizona Memorial and it was a memorable experience we will not forget. Words cannot explain or express the magnitude of the events that happened on that fateful day but visiting this national monument was an honor and the day that we were there was beautiful, glorious, and peaceful. We left the memorial with a sense of calm and with an even greater respect and appreciation of December 7th. - Karl

Since we’re in the middle of hurricane season, we’re providing tips meant to help you and your family feel more prepared in the event that a hurricane strikes.
Tip #2: Keep Accessible Supplies
You should have accessible supplies in the event that you either have to evacuate quickly or shelter in place.
This emergency supply kit should at minimum include:
• Water (One gallon per person per day)
• Non-perishable food
• Batteries and a radio
• Flashlight
• Personal hygiene items
• First-aid kit
• Copies of important documents (passport, birth certificate, insurance policies, etc.)
• Cash
FEMA recommends that your go-bag includes enough supplies for three days. If you want to prepare to shelter in place, an at-home emergency kit should be able to last your family for up to two weeks.

Hurricane season is upon us, and you can never be too prepared for a natural disaster. Our tips are meant to help you and your family feel more prepared in the event that a hurricane strikes.
Tip #1: Make a Plan
If you don’t already have one, you need to make a plan. What would you and your family do if there were to be a major hurricane in your area? How would you prepare your house for the worst-case scenario? Sit down with your family and discuss what you should do before hurricane season arrives. Make a plan for rain - and wind-proofing your home, evacuating quickly and/or supplying backup power to your home for several days.

In 2016, my (Richard's) son told me he wanted to enter American Ninja Warrior. At that time, there was no ANW Junior, but I told him he should start training. To help him train, I originally made a cargo net, Tarzan swinging ropes, and a climbing rope in my garage. He loved it and was able to do it all in less than two months, so I decided to make more things for him to train. Over a couple of years, the garage became a pretty diverse training facility that I ended up using for my Spartan group trainings as well. I love that he enjoys it and it's something we can do together and challenge each other.

*Planning Inheritances for Your Children*
Distribute Your Estate Yourself
One common mistake parents make is leaving their eldest child as the beneficiary and giving them the mandate to distribute the estate. Estate planning attorneys don't recommend this approach as it can cause conflict and hard feelings among family members. To negate alleviate any fighting, do the distribution yourself. Make a list of everything you own and indicate who actually gets what and the method to be used to distribute what is left.

The events of last year may have taken a toll on your financial situation. For those who had a financial advisor during that time, they were guided through all the ups and downs of the market and their personal financial lives. If you are getting back into the swing of things, a financial advisor could be just what you need.
We’ve identified five ways that a financial advisor can be valuable to you during the transition to a post-COVID life.
Way #1: They Can Re-Focus Your Financial Life
It’s possible the pandemic affected your financial life in some way - whether it caused a delay in meeting your savings goals, altered your income stream or drained your emergency fund.

He loved it and was able to do it all in less than two months, so I decided to make more things for him to train. Over a couple of years, the garage became a pretty diverse training facility that I ended up using for my Spartan group trainings as well. I love that he enjoys it and it's something we can do together and challenge each other.

Thank you Chris and Tanya Wirsing for all that you do and thank you Kay for being a great friend.
